Tilapia is a type of river fish, and whenever someone mentioned of river fish, it will gain loads of hatred, and critic that it gives some mud taste, or say its kind of cheap fish, or longkang (drain) fish.
However, I don’t care. As long as the chef are able to cook it well, I will eat it and love it.
So here, I present you Lan Je restaurant, a small shop in Rawang that sells great Steamed Tilapia.
As you can see, the shop is actually quite small. However, it’s always pack with customer, either it’s during lunch or dinner time. I once heard some customer there says they drive all the way from Kajang to Rawang just to eat.
The steamed tilapia here is great, awesome, superb!!! I really love the way it was cooked. Chili padi, ginger, garlic, simple yet bring out the freshness of the fish! Besides, it don’t have those mud taste or whatsoever that most river fish had. From an article I read at the shop where the owner was interviewed , she says that they put the tilapia in a fish tank few days before it was cook so that the mud taste of the fish was minimized.
There’s only 1 way to cook the tilapia here, but you can choose from normal spicy or extra spicy. I always go for the extra spicy one. Again, it was awesome!
As you guys know, the bigger the fish, the meat will usually be harder and not so smooth. Hence, here at Lan Je, most of their fish is big enough just for 1 person. Hence, you can see that at most table, they will order 5 fish if they have 5 people! This is quite a sight, as at most other place, everyone will share 1 fish only.
However, you still have the option to order a bigger fish if you wish to share. But I strongly recommend you to try 1 fish per person. The choice of other dish here is however very limited. I did try their steamed prawns and yau mak fu yu (yau mak cooked with fermented beancurd) and both of them are disappointing.
Lan Je restaurant, definitely a Must Try! restaurant. They had since open 2 more branch at Cheras and Kota Damansara, so one does not need to travel so far to taste the awesomeness Lan Je Steamed Tilapia. However, I once tried the branch at Cheras. Although the style of cooking is still the same, but the fish there is a bit too large, leading to the fish does not taste as smooth as the smaller one. Anyway, it still a great place to visit!
Total Damage: RM20 per person (I usually order bigger fish even if I eat alone, as the small one is just not enough for me)
