New Secret Restaurant had absolutely no link to its Chinese name, which means “Ah Nan Claypot Live Frog Porridge” if you translate it directly to English. I wonder why they choose such a name, but anyway, regardless to it’s name, it certainly catch my interest, mainly due to “claypot frog”.
Ever since I visit it the first time, it had become 1 of my favorite shop to visit, and to me, it’s also a must try delicacy in Sungai Petani.
The menu is easy, simple and limited. Basically you only get to choose from frog or eel. Each you can choose to either cook it in “Kung Poh” or “ginger and spring onion”, while for frog, you can choose to steamed it too if you wish. Other than that, the other choice in the menu is only vegetables. Even the choice of drinks is limited as there’s only 5 drinks to choose from.
One can however choose to eat porridge or rice.
The design of the restaurant, as it’s menu, is simple.
This nuts cost RM1.50, I usually won’t want it as it taste normal only.
The “soya ice” here nice though. Unlike most shop, where the “soya ice” is usually too sweet or no taste at all, but the one here taste just good.
Finally the main dish, “kung poh frog“. Oh yummy yummy. It’s one of the best “kung poh frog” that I ate before. The gravy here is thick unlike others which is usually watery. The frog is very fresh too, the meat is very tender and smooth.
However, some people might find that it’s a bit too spicy, but for me, it’s ok, and I even opt extra spicy. You can always ask them to reduce the spiciness if you wish.
Oh yummy. However, for Sungai Petani, the pricing here is consider expansive. I usually order the medium size one, which cost RM18 for the “kung poh frog“, while you can usually settle your lunch or dinner under RM5 at other place. However, to me it’s worth every penny.
Besides, the “kung poh eel” here is as goo too, but I haven’t got the chance to try the “ginger and spring onion” version yet. The vegetables is however just average. Come here for the claypot stuff (eel, frog and porridge), not others!
Sin-Chew Jit Poh once interview the owner of the restaurant. According to the owner, all the claypot used were specially order from factory, as only cooking the frog and eel with claypot will sustain the original taste of the frog and eel. Besides, “claypot frog porridge” origins from Geylang, Singapore, and Ah Nan is the person who bring it in to Malaysia. People at Geylang will mix the gravy of the frog or eel into their porridge, and eat it like that, which is sorta awesome if you do so.
Anyway, New Secret Restaurant is awesome, a really good place to eat especially in Sungai Petani where nice food is limited if compare to Penang.
