Restaurant Yoong Kee @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Talk about restaurant that got really long history, and this will definitely be one of them! Restaurant Yoong Kee had been here at Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam ever since when my mum was in her early working days, if her memory servers her right…….

The restaurant is small and old, but this never stopped people from coming to them. However, since it’s always packed, I really had to complained that it’s not really fun to have dinner there especially these days when the weather is god damned hot! All of us were sweating badly and we swear on them inside our heart on why they don’t want to invest a bit more on fan to make their customer feel more comfortable. It might be better if we came later, but since we arrive there around 6pm, the sun is still godly bright and awesomely hot…..grrr!

However, they do serve some nice Teochew food, luckily.

We start our hot dinner with a good bowl of hot pork and peanut soup. It taste good, and only if pork tail was used instead of pork ribs and lean meat. 6.5/10

The stir fried tofu here is highly recommended. The tofu was deep fried until the skin is very crispy while the inside maintain soft. A simple dish but was cook to perfection! 7.5/10

The pai kuat ong (sweet sour pork ribs) here is goodie stuff too. The pork is deep fried outside, and the meat is tender and soft. The sweetness is just good enough for you to increase your carbs (rice) intake. 7.3/10

Last but not least, the most recommended dish here is the Teowchew style steamed stingray. I saw many table order this type of steamed fish too, however, I must say I am sorta disappointed with it. Reason is the soup given is way way way too little. I am thinking did they spilled out most of the soup when they bring it out from the kitchen or what that is it that lead to such little soup. The soup do taste good, but it’s not that awesome yet. Maybe the cook is having a bad day? Besides, the fish was a bit overcooked too. I might give them another chance in the future though. 6.5/10

Overall, the food here is not bad. They seems to have many loyal eaters, and almost every time I pass by the restaurant, it’s full house. So if you are out of luck, you might have to stand and wait for a place since tables are limited.

  1. Hmm… it’s quite true that only the fish was Teochew… the rest looked Cantonese.. ๐Ÿ˜› Hey, the price was reasonable… I won’t call that a damage since there was a fish dish.
