Zakaria Laksa Teluk Kechai @ Alor Setar

Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, is very very famous of it’s laksa. No, not the Asam Laksa you find it Penang, but rather a variant of it, known as Laksa Kedah.

The most famous Kedah Laksa is Laksa Teluk Kechai, and Zakaria Laksa is the best according to many people.

According to what I understand, Kedah Laksa is supposed to be very similar to Asam Laksa in Penang, and the only difference is the garnishing used.

However, it doesn’t taste the same to me. Well, yes it taste the same if you were to compare it to those really lousy Asam Laksa in Penang. The soup is sorta tasteless besides salty, and I can’t taste any fish on the soup. It was so bad that I almost want to stop eating it after 1 spoon, but looking at the crowd there, I find that doing it will be too insulting to them.

However, although the laksa soup is very very bad, but the noodle is good. It’s much firmer and also taste nicer, and better to bite it compare to many other places. 2.0/10

The Lai Chee Kang is ok though, although I don’t really like it especially they have peanuts inside it. 3.0/10

This is also the 1st time I saw a laksa stall actually selling laksa based by weight. RM10 per kg! This is madness.

Look at the crowd, it’s 3 PM evening, not during lunch or dinner time. When I pass by them during dinner time later, the road was full of cars parked by people who are dining there, which I totally can’t understand, what so good about it?

  1. I had the same expectations crushed when eating a Malay laksa, a very famous one in Kuala Kangsar. Then only I noticed that Malay style of laksa is meant to be that way. Not like the conventional Assam Laksa.
    Watery, without much fish, and with a distinctive salty taste.

    • haha…i know it’s different therefore when i go, i didn’t expect it to taste like laksa, just like eating another new type of mee.

      but it just doesn’t taste nice at all

  3. Bro, just read ur blog. I’m frm Alor Setar n has been frequenting this place for quite some times. The soup is thin, agreed. But the difference is that u r supposed to add the coconut paste to thicken it..then it will be different. As for the noodle, it’s home made, from 100% rice flour, on the spot. U should have checked the place inside the hse. So they call it Laksa Beras. The garnishing is typical for Kedah, where typical ulam is used instead of salad n pineapple.
    Another recommendation is to try Kuala Perlis Laksa where the soup will taste different, but to me is also quite good. Can’t remember the restaurant names since haven’t been there for quite some times. But they don’t use belacan for the soup, n instead use a lot of onion..

    • Malay-style Laksa Kedah is way different from Penang Laksa…usually I’ll keep an open mind when I try laksa from different states. Adding on to Ruhail, the appreciation comes when you deconstruct the laksa & understand its origins.

  4. agreed…

    those two types of Laksa are on totally opposite spectrums. In Penang there are 2 types of laksa (not counting in the Laksa Siam/Lemak), Assam Laksa which originates from Peranakan culture and Penang Malay Laksa which is quite close to Kedah Laksa.

    I am a laksa fan but apart from me being a Penangite, truthfully up until now I couldn’t stomach more than 3 sips of the Assam Laksa before throwing up. I guess you must have felt the same thing when you were there. Those 2 types have really different perspectives to it and from my experience, I had came to a conclusion that one couldn’t simply mix their tastebuds to appreciate both the first time they go for it.

    For me, I would go for the latter Penang type and the Kedah one which you dislike.
